Calories in Watermelon

I love watermelon. I grow it in my garden, and when my own watermelon plants don't have melons, I buy them at the market, preferably organic. We will talk about the calories; a watermelon has some calories, although not a lot, and it is a great thirst quencher on hot summer days. I am going to share my favourite watermelon recipes with you!

There are many delicious recipes with watermelon. The calories are not an issue if you use it in little chunks to kill your hunger pangs when you're dieting, and I will give you a recipe too, which I myself find delicious, and my children find that too (which is not so easy).

Before we talk about calories...

Watermelon combines great with other fruit, just try out your own preferred combination!

I love it with papaya, grapes, apple.

And as a started I often use melon with presunto, the Iberian dried ham which is so well-known for it's distinguishing flavour. The best hams have been dried for 3 years!

Now that Summer is coming..

Eagle Eye sent this recipe in the comment section - What a wonderful idea! If you have your own watermelon favorite, please share and I can add it to the recipes here!

Eagle Eye's recipe:

Watermelon juice with fresh mint.

Cut cubes of watermelon, and add them to a few ice cubes and a few torn up mint leaves in the blender. Blitz in the blender for a minute or so until blended. She writes "Yummy and very refreshing!" - I tried it and it IS very yummie! thanks for that!

Chef Howie Schwartz makes it a bit more sophisticated (and with more calories..):

He throws 1 to 2 cups seedless watermelon chunks in the blender with 1 tablespoon of honey,
1 tablespoon fresh mint leaves (or to taste). Quickly blend (don't overdo it). Then mix in the yoghurt and the cinnamon using the pulse function just until it is smooth.

Seems yummie too, I haven't tried it yet (because of the honey...)

If you try it, tell us which one you prefer!

Jean: I had answered you, but the comment got lost somewhere...!

I did think watermelon had 0 calories, and actually thinking about it, the sweet flavor has to come from somewhere... But I am happy that it is still very low in calories.

Viking: I looked at your page, cool. I never realised. Will check it out LOL

Thanks for commenting all!

Did try it, it is delicious! Sometimes i have too many watermelons from my garden, and this a cool way to store them: juice them and freeze the juice. Thanks for the tip!

Newcapo:

tnx for the comment!

Pls see the nutritional facts on the seeds - if you want to lose weight, don't overdo it with the seeds :-)

Watermelon is a delicious fruit. Calories arent too high, its fruit, its healthy for you. just think if you went on just a watermelon diet you would probably lose weight at just 86 calories a wedge

charkamman profile image

charkamman Hub Author 3 years ago

Rkat! You might be right!

I will do some research to see what a fruit diet does..

On the other hand, I suppose I would feel hungry on only fruit..

I did lose 2 kg (6 pounds) over the last week because I substituted one meal per day with a meal replacement drink (look here: http://www.moreinfo247.com/9246630/VAWL ). Not sure how long I will have to use it, but it tastes good. I am also taking extra CLA, if you want to know more about Conjugated Linoleic Acid, why we have a much smaller intake than30 years ago, and why this makes us fat, read http://hubpages.com/hub/Avocado-Calories .

Watermelon is hands down my favorite food. I liked your hub but I still think that I prefer my watermelon straight up - either eating it right off the rind or in cut up chunks. Of course you do mention your efforts to get your kids to eat it, and I do not have to worry about that.......

Thanks for the hub.

Lupo, I agree: I LOVE watermelon just plain - delicious when it has been in the fridge for a while.

The 800 calorie diet menu and meal plan is generically formulated by replacing most of the regular food with meal replacement supplements and liquid diets. The exact diet formulation will be designed by your physician depending on a lot of factors like your weight, age, medical conditions etc. He will give all the details about what to eat and when and will also ask to see you every two weeks or so when you are taking the diet.

Charkamman, what a great blog. For me loving Watermelon took years to acquire. I'd watch my mom from childhood slice a watermelon in half and sit and eat one entire half. She would split the other half with me and my two sisters and father. They still have to be perfectly ripe for me with a balance of color, sweetness and juiciness, but I've learned to do wonderful things with them too and my favorite is my Watermelon margarita. It has too many calories to be healthy. It is refreshing fun on a hot summer evening.
